In this teaching on relationships, counselor Randy Powell shares how respect plays a powerful role in building healthy marriages and meaningful connections. Research shows that the strongest relationships are built on mutual respect, defined as having a deep admiration for another person’s abilities, character, and unique design.

Powell explains that respect works in two directions. It involves both giving respect to others and developing self-respect. Without recognizing our own value, it becomes difficult to receive affirmation or encouragement from others. Scripture reminds us that every person is intentionally created by God and described as “fearfully and wonderfully made,” which forms the foundation for healthy self-respect.

Using the idea of a masterpiece, Powell illustrates how every person has both beauty and a story. Like famous works of art that become more valuable through their history, each individual’s life story, including struggles, mistakes, and restoration, adds depth and meaning. Even when people feel marred, scarred, or painted over by life experiences, the Creator is still able to restore and renew what has been damaged.

The message ultimately encourages listeners to see themselves and others through this lens of value and respect. When people recognize the masterpiece within themselves and within others, relationships shift from criticism and conflict to understanding, healing, and restoration.
